Ceramic coating vs wax and polish: what is the difference?

Drivers often ask whether a ceramic coating replaces polishing, or whether regular car wax does the same job. In short: machine polishing fixes the paint, while a ceramic coating protects it. Whereas wax washes off in weeks, our machine polish and 5-year ceramic coating (£250 to £400) restores a deep mirror finish and locks it in for years.

Step 1 is machine polishing. Step 2 is ceramic coating.

Even a brand-new or well-kept car develops fine cobweb swirl marks from sponge washing, automated car washes and road grit. Those microscopic scratches scatter light and make paintwork look flat.

In our ceramic coating bay at Moulton Park, we machine polish the bodywork first to level the clear coat back to a deep, showroom gloss, then apply a 5-year ceramic coating that cures into a hard, hydrophobic shield.

5-year ceramic coating vs car wax

5-Year Ceramic Coating (with Machine Polish)

From £250

  • Machine polishing removes swirl marks and dullness before the coating goes on
  • Chemically bonds to the clear coat for 5 years of protection
  • Extreme hydrophobic water beading makes routine washing quick and effortless
  • Shields paint against UK winter road salt, bird lime, bug etching and UV fading
  • Deep, candy-like showroom gloss that does not wash off in the rain

Traditional Car Wax or Spray Sealant

Temporary top-up

  • Sits on the surface of the paint rather than bonding to the clear coat
  • Breaks down after 1 to 3 months of rain, traffic film and detergent washes
  • Does not remove swirl marks or oxidation (only masks minor blemishes briefly)
  • Offers minimal resistance against acidic bird droppings or harsh winter grit
  • Requires constant re-application four to six times a year to stay protected

Interior seat ceramic coating

Ceramic protection is not only for exterior paintwork. Our interior car detailing Premium package (from £130) includes deep fabric or leather seat cleaning followed by a dedicated interior ceramic coating that repels spills and stops blue denim dye transfer on light leather seats.

Headlight PPF and stone-chip protection

While ceramic coating stops chemical etching and swirl marks, high-impact front zones benefit from physical film. We offer headlight restoration and clear PPF to shield lenses and vulnerable paintwork against motorway stone chips, and car window tinting to block 99% of UV inside the cabin.

Ceramic coating questions

What is the difference between machine polishing and ceramic coating?

Machine polishing is a corrective process that removes swirl marks, light scratches and oxidation from your car's clear coat to restore deep gloss. Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied afterwards that chemically bonds to the freshly polished paint to lock in that shine and protect it for 5 years.

How long does ceramic coating last compared to car wax?

Traditional carnauba wax or spray sealants sit on top of the paint and wash away after 4 to 12 weeks of UK rain, road salt and car washes. The ceramic coating we apply at Tinting Brothers is a 5-year ceramic coating that forms a semi-permanent bond with your lacquer.

How much does machine polishing and ceramic coating cost in Northampton?

At Tinting Brothers, full machine polishing with a 5-year ceramic coating costs £250 for a small car, £300 for a medium car, £350 for a large car and £400 for an XL or 4x4.

Why should you always machine polish a car before ceramic coating?

A ceramic coating is completely transparent and locks in whatever surface is underneath it. If you apply a 5-year coating over unpolished paint, you trap swirl marks, wash marring and dullness under a hard glass-like layer. Machine polishing first ensures the paint looks like a mirror before it is sealed.

Does ceramic coating stop stone chips, or do I need PPF for that?

Ceramic coating protects against UV fading, bird droppings, tree sap, road salt, chemical staining and wash-induced swirl marks, and makes mud and water bead off effortlessly. However, to stop physical high-speed stone chips on front bumpers or headlights, you need clear Paint Protection Film (PPF).

Can you ceramic coat leather or fabric car seats too?

Yes. Our Premium interior detailing package (from £130) includes ceramic coating for fabric or leather seats to guard against dye transfer, coffee spills and staining.
