Can cloudy or yellowed headlights be restored for an MOT?

Tinting Brothers restores cloudy, yellowed and oxidised headlights and fits clear paint protection film (PPF) at our Moulton Park workshop in Northampton. Modern polycarbonate headlight lenses degrade under UV sunlight and road grit, turning hazy and failing MOT beam-pattern tests. We carefully mask the surrounding paintwork, wet-sand and machine-polish the degraded plastic back to factory clarity, and seal the lens against future UV yellowing and stone chips. All work carries a limited lifetime warranty. Send us a photo of your lights for a fast price.

Headlight restoration and PPF questions

Can cloudy headlights fail an MOT in the UK?

Yes. If a headlight lens is so cloudy, yellowed or crazed that it reduces light output or distorts the beam pattern, it is an MOT failure (or advisory if borderline). Restoring the lens removes the oxidised outer layer at a fraction of the cost of replacing complete headlamp units.

Why do plastic headlights turn yellow and foggy?

Modern headlights are made from polycarbonate plastic for impact safety. Over time, the factory UV hard-coat breaks down from sunlight, road salt and stone impacts, leaving the bare plastic exposed to oxidation and micro-pitting.

How do you stop headlights going cloudy again after polishing?

Simply polishing a headlight without sealing it leaves the bare polycarbonate exposed to UV rays, so it yellows again within months. Applying clear UV-stable protection film (PPF) locks in the clarity and shields the lens from stone chips.

What does paint protection film (PPF) protect?

Clear PPF is an optically transparent, impact-resistant urethane film applied to headlights and high-impact paintwork zones to stop stone chips, scratches, bug acid and road debris.
