Window tint percentages: 5%, 20%, 35% and 50% compared

Window tint darkness is measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT): the percentage of light that passes through the window. A lower number means a darker film. On the rear side windows and rear windscreen of a UK car, all four shades (50%, 35%, 20% and 5% limo) are 100% legal and cost the exact same price (£100 to £170 by body type).

Side-by-side performance

Every shade we fit uses OPX NR Elite Duo (two-ply, non-metallised and colour stable) and blocks 99% of UV rays. Darker shades increase privacy and glare reduction. For front window rules (75% windscreen, 70% front sides), read our UK window tint law guide.

How each shade looks in real life

50% Light Smoke

43% glare cut · 29% heat rejected

  • Best for: Drivers wanting subtle OEM styling, UV protection and glare control without a dark exterior look.
  • From outside: Lightly smoked. The cabin outline and seats remain visible in direct sunlight, with a clean, classy tint.
  • From inside: Virtually unnoticeable from the driver's seat day or night, with harsh headlight glare softened.

35% Medium Smoke

60% glare cut · 37% heat rejected

  • Best for: Coupes, saloons and drivers who want noticeable daytime privacy without going fully blacked out.
  • From outside: Noticeably darker than clear glass. Silhouettes are visible close up in bright sun, but cabin details are hidden.
  • From inside: Clear, comfortable view out in both daylight and night-time driving.

20% Dark Factory Match

77% glare cut · 41% heat rejected

  • Best for: Our most popular rear shade for hatchbacks, saloons, estates and family SUVs.
  • From outside: Matches or sits slightly deeper than manufacturer factory privacy glass. Hard to see into the cabin from outside.
  • From inside: Crisp outward visibility in daylight and easy reversing under streetlights or reversing cameras at night.

5% Limo Black

94% glare cut · 43% heat rejected

  • Best for: Maximum rear privacy, hiding tools or luggage in estates and SUVs, and keeping rear passengers shaded.
  • From outside: Near pitch-black from outside. People walking past cannot see passengers, child seats or valuables in the back.
  • From inside: Cool and shaded in bright sun; darker when reversing in unlit rural areas at night.

Factory privacy glass vs window film

Many modern SUVs and hatchbacks come with factory-darkened rear windows. Factory privacy glass is simply pigmented glass: it darkens the window to around 20% to 35% VLT, but it does not block solar heat or UV the way a two-ply solar film does. We can apply OPX NR Elite Duo directly over factory privacy glass to add 99% UV protection, cut heat and achieve a true 5% limo finish.

Replacing old or illegal tint

If your car already has old, bubbling or purple film, or if you bought a vehicle with illegal front window tints, we offer safe window tint removal that protects your rear heated screen lines before fitting new film. Most car window tinting bookings are completed in under 3 hours at our Moulton Park workshop. You can open and use your windows straight away. There is no need to wait.

Tint shade questions

What is the most popular rear window tint percentage in the UK?

20% VLT (dark smoke) is our most requested rear shade. It closely matches or slightly deepens standard manufacturer privacy glass, cuts 77% of glare and rejects 41% of solar energy while keeping night-time reversing comfortable.

Does a lower tint percentage mean darker or lighter glass?

A lower percentage means darker glass. Window tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT), which is the percentage of daylight that passes through the window. A 5% film lets only 5% of light in (blocking 95%), whereas a 50% film lets 50% of light in.

Is 5% limo tint too dark to see out of at night?

From inside the cabin during daylight, your eyes adjust quickly to 5% limo tint and you can see out clearly while nobody can see in. On unlit country roads or dark driveways at night, 5% reduces rear visibility noticeably, so drivers who reverse into unlit spaces often prefer 20% on the rear windscreen.

Does lighter window tint still block UV rays?

Yes. Every shade of OPX NR Elite Duo we fit blocks 99% of harmful UV radiation, whether you choose a subtle 50% tint or a 5% limo tint. You do not need blacked-out windows to protect children, pets or leather upholstery from UV rays.

Can you tint over factory privacy glass to make it darker?

Yes. Factory privacy glass is dyed during glass manufacturing (usually around 20% to 35% VLT) and offers privacy but limited heat rejection. Applying film over the inside of factory privacy glass deepens the shade and adds full UV and solar energy rejection.

Can I mix two different tint percentages on my rear windows?

Yes, at no extra cost. Many family SUV and estate owners choose 5% limo on the rear passenger doors and boot side quarters for maximum child and luggage privacy, paired with 20% on the rear heated screen for easier night-time reversing.
